The 1st residential phase of the Hagibor development in Prague 10 has been completed. Comprising the Alfa and Beta buildings which together provide 160 dwellings and a total of 14 646 m2 gross area.
A key challenge with such large multi-unit buildings is to achieve a sense of human scale and individuality where inevitably there is so much repetition of similar sized units. In response, we turned this repetition into a virtue by designing 2 buildings which ‘play off ’ one another ; Alfa, which we christened the ‘hedgehog’ growing organically based on cubic blocks with private terraces above them and Beta a slick horizontally articulated counterfoil with a projecting balcony framework providing shading and protection against road noise.
It was critical for us to design comfortable and distinct public and private spaces and in the semi-enclosed courtyard the concept of a ‘micro wood’ was developed with the French landscape designer Michelle Desvigne. This helps to modify the microclimate and amplifies the connection to nature and is a theme that will be replicated throughout the development.
The developer is Crestyl Real Estate and the contractor was Metrostav. Landscape architects were MDP.
